General Degree Requirements

Minimum of 30 semester credits to be completed within 7 years: This will include 24 course credits and one professional project (6 credits). All courses are offered as online (web-based) classes. All courses must be taken at the graduate level.

Within two semesters after beginning the degree program, the student is required to submit a course program to the advisory committee. This will include a one-page proposal describing the professional project. If the project includes the use of facilities at the student’s work place, a letter of support from his/her employer is required. The student will select (or be assigned) a faculty advisor who will support this project. The student will enroll in BP 8300 (IDL section) while completing the research project. The project must be completed within one year.

Only course work with a minimum grade of B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) will be counted towards completion of the degree. Up to 10 transfer credits in graduate courses of equivalent content at the grade of B or higher will be allowed. Transfer credits are subject to approval by the advisory committee. This degree is a coursework only degree and does not require a final exam.

Clarifications concerning BP 8300: Professional project

At this point it is anticipated that the faculty advisors will provide guidance for the professional projects and will direct students independently. These projects can include detailed literature reviews or actual experiments performed in the mill. For example, a detailed summary of the literature dealing with the effect of recycling on the properties of different papermaking fiber, presented in form of a report (including own conclusions and suggested path forwards) could qualify as one of these projects. We anticipate that most of the professional projects will be initiated by some actual need at the student’s work place. For example response of refiner plates on papermaking properties would be a project several paper mills would readily support. Projects such as this will require a literature review to determine known factors that impact refining performance, a small mill trial using different plates, collecting of data, presenting of data in appropriate tables and graphs, conclusions and a path forward. Both types of projects described here will result in an extensive report to be submitted for grading to the faculty advisor.
