BBE 8306 Bio-based Products Graduate Seminar (1 credit)

Catalog Description:

Building science theory, advanced applications for residential buildings. Focuses on heat/mass transfer.

Prerequisites:

Graduate Standing

Class/Laboratory Schedule:

The schedule of student seminars are determined by the number of students enrolling in the course each Spring semester. The first three weeks are spent reviewing the University policy on the Responsible Conduct of Research. Each student delivers a presentation after week three. At the final meeting, students provide learning feedback for the course.

Grading:

The grade for the seminar is A-F. It is based on attendance at all class sessions and on the presentation of the two seminars by the student, as follows:

Participation in class (attendance required) 40% (2% for each class period)
Class discussion of ethics topic 10
Quality of second seminar 50
Total 100%

Seminar Objectives:

There are three objectives to the course: (1) To address the issue of scientific ethics through assigned readings leading to class discussion and the delivery of seminars. (2) To inform the faculty and graduate students on the research being conducted in graduate programs in the department. And, (3) To provide a forum for outside speakers and department faculty to inform the faculty and graduate students on their research programs.

Objective 1. The University of Minnesota requires that each student enrolled for graduate study be instructed in the topic of research and teaching ethics. Each student will lead a class discussion on an ethics topics of their choosing from the website topics (www.research.umn.edu/ethics/) , expanded upon from outside research.

Objective 2. Each student will deliver one 45-minute presentation on his or her research. These presentations will cover an amount appropriate to each student’s particular point in his or her work toward the graduate degree. All presentations made with the formality expected at a professional society meeting. (April 9, 16, 23)

Objective 3. Faculty members will deliver lectures on their research programs or current areas of work.
