| Grading: |
Grading base: Students will be required to work in teams
of 3. Each student will be required to submit one (individual)
lab report summarizing the lab exercises 3. All other lab
exercises will require completion of a 1-2 page work-sheet.
Students will be graded based on
lab report (30%),
work sheets (25%),
participation, including performance in team (15%)
open book final examination (30%)
Graduate Credit: Students taking the course for graduate
credit will be required to answer additional questions
in exams and/or graduate student project

Course Content
- Chemical reaction Kinetics, Mass and Energy Balance (Kraft
pulping, Chlorine Dioxide bleaching on non-wood pulp).
Mass balance, energy input, H-factor, residual chemical analysis, discussion
on wood fiber properties compared to non-wood (2 lab sections)
- Cellulose Viscosity measurement
Comparative measurements for unbleached Kraft pulps, oxygen and chlorine
dioxide bleached wood pulp, bleached non-wood fiber. Discussion of molecular
weight distributions, Degree of polymerization, random chain cleavage and
impact on pulp properties (1 lab section)
- Recycled fiber (Repulping, Flotation ink removal,
Residual ink determination)
Repulping of Mixed Office Waste, mass and energy balance, flotation deinking,
enzymatically enhanced deinking, determination of residual ink. Discussion
on solid waste issues for recycled fiber mills. (3 lab sections)
- Zeta potential measurement
Characterization of fiber suspension for surface charge. Demonstration of
controlling charge through additives and their effect (1 lab section)
- Flow through porous media, Liquid Permeability, Absorbency
rate, Air permeability, Sizing test
Experiments measuring rate of water penetration into paper. Measurement of
Air permeability ( either demonstration using TAD set-up or actual experiment
using Fraizer permeability tester). Testing of effectiveness of sizing agents
using Hercules Size tester (3 lab sections)
- Drying, heat and mass transfer ( wood and
paper) (3 lab sections)
Heat and mass transfer during wood and paper drying (set-up to be determined)
- Composites engineering (1 lab section)
