BBE 3412 Introduction to Residential Building Materials Estimating (1 credit)

Catalog Description:

To familiarize students with residential construction terminology and to provide a basic understanding of estimating procedures, including blueprint reading and piece by piece building material “take-off” from construction plans.

Prerequisites:

General Physics and Math through algebra and trigonometry.

Class/Laboratory Schedule:

The class meets Thursdays, 3:00-4:55 p.m. in 125 Kaufert Lab. Weekly sessions will include lectures, classroom discussion and demonstrations; however, the emphasis is on independent work on assigned estimating exercises.

Text:

Residential Building Materials Estimating by Keith Kluis, is required. Other references including Wood-Frame House Construction, USDA Handbook No. 73, 1989, will be available on reserve in the Forestry Library. An architects scale rule is also required.

Grading:

The course grade will be based upon estimating exercises (lessons), quizzes, and the final exam. A total of ten exercises, with a combined point value of 500, will be completed and handed in during the quarter. The final exam is worth 350 points and quizzes will total 150 points. Assignments are due by the end of the class on the day indicated in the course outline. Late assignments will be penalized 20 percent for every day they are late.
