Areas of Interest

Dr. Timothy Smith is Associate Professor of Environmental Sciences, Policy, and Management, and Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering at the University of Minnesota.  He received a BS (1993, Business Administration) from the University of Colorado, and a MBA (1996, Marketing/Management Science) and Ph.D. (1998, Agricultural Sciences) from Penn State University; he has also held positions in the financial and telecommunications industries.  Dr. Smith’s current research and consulting efforts focus on organizational adoption of energy efficiency, renewable energy, and other environmental performance enhancing technologies, as well as the effectiveness of marketing communications around ‘green’ messaging and life cycle assessment (LCA) information. Sponsoring organizations include: US Department of Energy, US Department of Agriculture, MN Department of Commerce, MN Pollution Control Agency, Institute for the Study of Business Markets (ISBM), 3M Corp., AT&T, Andersen Corp., Louisiana Pacific Corp., and Pentair Corp.  Dr. Smith is a frequent speaker at conferences and workshops throughout the U.S., Europe, and Latin America, and his work has appeared in the most highly respected academic journals including: International Journal of Research in Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Business Research, and, International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment.  Dr. Smith is a former AT&T Industrial Ecology Fellow and also serves as the Director of the Forest Products Management Development Institute (FPMDI), a unique industry/University partnership focused on environmental and managerial aspects of the forest products and building materials industries.
