Email and Directory Options (http://www.umn.edu/validate)

Blocked email - if you suspect someone has tried to email you, but you haven't received it, or if someone calls to tell you their email was blocked by the U of M, go to Email and directory options and check the category called "Show Blocked Incoming Email". Your correspondent's email address may be on the list, in which case you have an option to unblock it. There is always a reason associated with the blocking, for example "DNS." You can click on that to read the reason. You may want to copy and send that text to the correspondent, so they can pass it along to their Information Technology people. The U is becoming more and more aggressive about blocking emails.

Is your mailbox full?
Check your space by logging into Email and Directory Options and choosing Show Current Email Storage Use. You have a maximum of 1 GB of space available to you. Note: It should not all be in your InBox; it will be arbitrarily moved to other folders for you. For best speed, keep your inbox below 20 MB. Create folders and move messages into them.

Groupwise to Thunderbird and UMCal

Steps involved:

• Install Thunderbird
• Install UMCal
• Clean up Groupwise: get rid of archive; sort or discard messages. There is also a utility that allows you to save messages to your hard disk and keep them there.
• Transfer email from Groupwise to Thunderbird. Folders can be transferred in one step
• Transfer calendar
• Transfer address book
• Transfer mail forwarding from COAFES server back to central server
• Delete Groupwise (this is a no-return option!)
