Choosing Between Brands of Dryers

William F. Wilcke, Extension Engineer

I get a lot of calls from people who are buying a new high-temperature grain dryer and have narrowed the selection to two or three different brands. Unfortunately, we don't have any independent test results to help us compare different brands of dryers. As you would expect, each manufacturer claims that its dryer is better than the competition. So how do you decide which dryer to buy?

There are some minor design differences among the most commonly available brands of dryers, and there are probably minor advantages and disadvantages to each brand. But for the most part, the best known brands are fairly similar and probably provide similar performance. Dryer manufacturers have worked hard the last decade to improve energy efficiency and moisture control, and to reduce grain damage. Nearly any dryer you buy today is likely to be much better than models available 20 years ago. Shop around for the best price you can get from a dealer who can provide good service and you should end up with a reliable dryer--regardless of brand.
