Background Hydrogen Sulfide Analysis

David Schmidt, Assistant Extension Engineer
Charles Clanton, Professor
Carrie Tengman, Director of Environmental Services, National Pork Board

Funding Source

National Pork Board, Des Moines, Iowa; Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station

Objective

The purpose of this study was to take a second look at a data set of ambient (background) hydrogen sulfide (H2S) concentrations collected around seven swine operations in Minnesota. A complete description of the original project, data collection methods, and summary statistics are found in Background Ambient Air Hydrogen Sulfide Monitoring Project 2002 by the Minnesota Pork Board, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, BAE-UM, and National Pork Board.

Need or Impact

In order to perform a swine facilities site evaluation (new or expansion), an odor and gas emission evaluation and dispersion modeling is needed. An important need for this evaluation is background H2S or the H2S concentration of the air coming across the property line boundaries upwind. Increases in background H2S might be a results of adjacent livestock operations, land application of manures, or other H2S emitting sources.

Project Status

Complete.
