Comparison of Daily Crop ET Estimation Models

Jerry Wright, Associate Professor, West Central Research and Outreach Center, Morris, MN
Cooperators include East Otter Tail Soil and Water Conservation District at Perham, Wadena County SWCD and Central Lakes Ag Center at Staples.

Funding Source

Irrigators Association of Minnesota

Objective

  1. Compare the daily ET estimations from several ET models over 2-3 locations in Central Minnesota.
  2. Encourage adoption of using daily crop ET information in an irrigator’s water scheduling program.

Need or Impact

Irrigation scheduling is an important task to optimize a crop production system and reduce the risk of leaching crop chemicals into the groundwater. Access to and knowledge of daily crop water use (ET) is a critical factor in deciding when to irrigate. Project results have encouraged some farmers to utilize their local ET hotline and/or the Wisconsin-Minnesota Daily Crop ET web site.

Project Status

Ongoing.
