The Agricultural Safety and Health Program

John Shutske, Professor and Extension Agricultural Safety and Health Specialist
Michele Schermann, Research Fellow
Ruth Rasmussen, Research Fellow

Funding Source

USDA-CSREES, University of Minnesota Extension Service, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

Objective

Develop and deliver innovative extension and academic education programs designed to help protect the lives and health of agricultural workers and farm families in Minnesota and nearby states.

Need or Impact

Agriculture remains one of the nation’s two most dangerous industries and is the most dangerous when childhood injuries are included. Agricultural workers also face a range of unique workplace exposures that impact their health such as dusts, gases, chemicals, noise, and sun exposure. We provide research-based educational programs, content for workshops and other events, the Agricultural Safety and Health Information Clearinghouse website, and targeted educational programs for specialty groups such as doctors, nurses, and veterinarians.

Status

Ongoing.
