In Memoriam: Evan Allred

Evan R. Allred, 87, of St. Paul, Minnesota, died April 17, 2004. Allred received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Utah State University in 1939 and a Master of Science degree in agricultural engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1941. Early in his career, he worked for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the U.S. Corps of Engineers. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a proud WWII veteran. Allred joined the faculty in 1945, retiring as Professor Emeritus in 1986 after more than 40 years of teaching and research in the fields of irrigation, drainage, and water supply. He was a strong advocate of undergraduate and graduate education and advised many students. Allred consulted on many projects in the United States and around the world including India, Indonesia, Pakistan, France, England, and Germany. Ev and Donna Allred were married for 64 years. He is also survived by children Diane, Marcia, and Richard, seven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.

In 2000, Ev and Donna established the Evan Allred Scholarship, which is awarded yearly to a department undergraduate. Contributions may be sent to the Allred Scholarship Fund, University of Minnesota Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, 1390 Eckles Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55108.


In Memoriam: Adeline Pecchia

Students, faculty, and staff members of the department between 1967 and 1985 will remember Adeline Pecchia, who was the Executive Secretary to the department head during those years.

Adeline died on December 10, 2003, at the age of 89. After retirement from the University of Minnesota, Adeline remained in contact with many of the other department retirees, often attending St. Paul campus and department events. She also traveled and spent time with her large extended family.
