Bill Wilcke is Regional NCRSARE Coordinator

As of July 1, 2002, Bill Wilcke, Professor and Extension Engineer, is spending half of his time as Regional Coordinator for the North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (NCRSARE) program.

The national SARE program is a USDA program that began with the 1985 Farm Bill. Congress appropriated initial funds in 1988 for grants in sustainable agriculture research, education, and demonstration. Funding goes to producers, scientists, educators, and public and private institutions and organizations in three grant programs (Research and Education Grants, Producer Grants, and Professional Development Program Grants). The North Central region, managed by a 22-member Administrative Council composed of farmers, researchers, extension personnel, government agency representatives, and non-profit representatives, and directed by a Regional Coordinator, is one of four regions in the SARE Program. See www.sare.org/ncrsare for more information about the North Central region.

The NCRSARE program headquarters is at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, and Bill travels to Lincoln several times a month. He still remains located at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul.

In addition to serving as the key staff person to the Administrative Council as they develop program goals and make funding decisions, the Regional Coordinator oversees and promotes NCRSARE to a broad audience. The Coordinator provides leadership for the research and education program, supervises staff, and manages grants and budgets.
