Alumnus Ken Albrecht Remembers U
Ken (MS 1960) and Jan (BS 1957, Occupational Therapy) Albrecht
have endowed the University of Minnesota with a charitable remainder trust
that will pay them an income in their lifetime and then pass to the University.
The Albrechts gift will be divided between several beneficiaries,
including the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering.
Ken graduated in 1960 with a masters degree in Agricultural Engineering.
He worked with Professor John Strait (MS 1945) and built a baler to make
small 12 x 12 x 12 inch bales. After graduating he worked on swathers
and hay conditioners at Owatonna Manufacturing for 18 months before heading
off to Purdue University for five years to work on various research projects.
With an interest in technical training, Ken and Jan returned to Minnesota
in the mid-1960s, and he began teaching at Mankato Vocational Technical
Institute. He taught various technical courses during his 27-year career
at MVTI. In the 1980s he took up public service, serving as a Nicollet
County Commissioner for 16 years. He was active in the Minnesota River
Advisory Committee. He also served on the Citizen Advisory committee for
the Generic Environmental Impact Statement on Animal Agriculture. He continues
to serve on the Regent Candidate Advisory Council. He has also received
a number of awards and commendations including the University of Minnesota
Extension Service Directors Award for Distinguished Contributions
while he was a Nicollet County Commissioner.
Planned Giving Options
Life income agreements allow you to create a named endowment and generate
an annual income for yourself or other beneficiaries. In addition, life
income agreements may have certain tax advantages. Alumni and friends
of the University have used planned giving to provide funds for scholarships,
fellowships, professorships, research, and special programs. The future
of the University of Minnesota is also the future of Minnesota and our
children and grandchildren, and you can participate in shaping that future
through planned giving.
There are several ways to participate, including charitable gift annuities,
charitable remainder trusts, or charitable lead trusts. If you are interested
in contributing to the future of the Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering
Department by using planned giving tools, please contact Kevin Janni,
Department Head, at (612) 625-3108 or kjanni@umn.edu.
But contributions of any size are welcomed. Your gift today helps the
Minnesota of tomorrow.

We are grateful for contributions of any size to our programs. If you
