Capital Campaign

Additional support for students in the form of scholarships and fellowships is a high priority for the department in the University's Capital Campaign. In 2000 we awarded about $22,000 in undergraduate scholarships and $10,000 in graduate fellowships.

The 21st Century Graduate Program Endowment is a great opportunity to leverage gifts to support fellowships for our graduate program. The 21st Century program will match gifts of $25,000 or more for graduate fellowships in any of the 185 graduate programs administered by the University's Graduate School, including the graduate program in biosystems and agricultural engineering. Donations may be made by individuals or groups of individuals. The match will start once the endowment reaches $25,000. These donations would enhance the department graduate fellowship program started several years ago which currently provides outstanding graduate students a $5,000 stipend in addition to their graduate assistantship. The amount available for use each year is 5.5% of an endowment, so a total of almost $100,000 of endowment is required to generate another $5,000 fellowship. Thus, donations of $50,000 plus the match of $50,000 would provide an endowment for a new fellowship that could be awarded each year.

We hope alumni and friends of the department will consider contributing to this effort. For more information please call Vance Morey at (612) 625-8775, or email rvmorey@umn.edu.
