Each year, scholarships are awarded to students who are enrolled in or are preparing to transfer into the following department majors at the University of Minnesota. PurposeScholarships recognize and assist students majoring in the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering programs. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic accomplishments, professional potential in one of our specializations, leadership, and participation in department and campus activities. Amount and Duration of AwardsScholarship award amounts of $2,000 for Academic Achievement Awards or $3,000 for Academic Leadership Awards, per academic year, for a maximum of 4 years (8 semesters). Scholarship payments will be divided in equal amounts for the two semesters of the academic year. How to ApplyAfter careful review of the guidelines and criteria, please complete the application (.doc). The application can be downloaded and saved as a Word file and e-mailed to: seltz043@umn.edu. You can also mail it to the address on the application. Applications are reviewed during spring semester of each year. Eligibility will be confirmed at the beginning of each semester. * The Academic Leadership Award also takes into consideration leadership qualities, outstanding non-academic achievements, and rigor of curriculum. Scholarship PoliciesIn order to maintain your scholarship you must: - Be actively pursuing one of the following degree programs in the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering:
- Biobased Products in CFANS:
- Bio-based Products Marketing and Management
- Residential Building Science and Technology
- Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering (BBE) in IT or pre-BBE in CFANS:
- Bioproducts Engineering
- Environmental and Ecological Engineering
- Bioprocessing and Food Engineering
- If not yet enrolled, you must have proof that you have submitted a “Change of College Form” by the first day of classes of the semester for which you are applying for the scholarship. If admittance into the department is not granted for the following semester, the scholarship will be suspended
- Enroll in a minimum of 13 academic credits and complete at least one BBE class toward your degree per semester or obtain an exemption signed by your advisor
- Complete a minimum of 13 academic credits the previous semester.
- Maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 out of 4.0. (Summer school does not count as a full semester.) Only courses from the University of Minnesota will be used in calculating the grade point average
- Write an appropriate letter of appreciation to the scholarship sponsor or representative.
- Attend the annual scholarship banquet and participate in other scholarship recognition functions.
- Reapply each academic year.
Failure to meet these criteria will result in suspension of your scholarship for the following semester. The scholarships criteria are used as general guidelines and all scholarship awards are granted under the discretion of the scholarship committee.
