Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering Scholarships

The purpose of the scholarships is to recognize and assist students majoring in Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering programs. Scholarships for ongoing students are awarded on the basis of academic accomplishments, professional potential in one of our specializations, leadership, and participation in department or campus activities. The selection criteria includes: actively pursuing a degree in BBE, Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering or Bio-based Products, and taking a minimum of 13 academic credits, completion of at least one BBE class per semester or obtain an advisor exemption, completion of a minimum of 13 academic credits the previous semester, and maintaining a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, or obtaining a minimum GPA of 3.0 over the previous two semesters. Selection criteria for incoming freshmen include: ACT or SAT, GPA, high school rank, leadership qualities, outstanding non-academic achievements, and rigor of curriculum. Scholarship award amounts range from $2,000 for Academic Achievement Awards to $3,000 for Academic Leadership Awards per academic year for a maximum of 4 years (8 semesters). Bioproducts Engineering Scholarship

This scholarship was originally established in 1985 for the then Paper Science and Engineering program. Funding is provided through annual contributions from the Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering Advisory Council members in support of the BBE, Bioproducts Engineering program.

Bio-based Products Scholarship

Established in 1998, with the first gift from Howard Hedstrom, Hedstrom Lumber Company, this fund supports scholarships for undergraduate students pursuing a degree in Bio-based Products. Funding is provided through the Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering Advisory Council members’ annual contributions in support of the Bio-based Products Marketing and Management and the Residential Building Science and Technology programs.

PIMA Scholarship

PIMA - Paper Industry Management Association – is an association of management professionals in the pulp and paper industry. The PIMA Scholarship Endowment was established in 1987. The purpose of this scholarship is to attract and support outstanding students who are preparing for careers in the pulp, paper and allied support industries.

MN TAPPI Scholarship

This endowed scholarship by the Minnesota section of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI) was established in 1986. TAPPI membership includes professionals from the pulp, paper and allied industries. The purpose of this endowment is to provide financial assistance to outstanding students pursuing Bioproducts Engineering.

Lake States TAPPI Scholarship

This endowed scholarship by the Lake States (including Wisconsin and Minnesota) section of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI) was established in November 1988. TAPPI membership includes professionals from the pulp, paper and allied industries. The purpose of this endowment is to provide scholarship support for up to 4 undergraduate students yearly pursuing Bioproducts Engineering.

Paper Chase Scholarship

Established in 1992, this fund is for scholarships for students majoring in Bioproducts Engineering. This was established by Scott Robertson, BE&K Engineering, Alabama, a leader in the pulp and engineering field and a long-standing supporter of pulp and paper engineering programs around the nation. Contributions to this fund also come from generous supporters and participants in the marathon (hence, Paper Chase) held at the national TAPPI conferences each year.

Paper Science Alumni Scholarship

Established in 1998, this fund is used to support merit scholarships for Bioproducts Engineering students.

Mulrooney Scholarship

The Mulrooney Scholarship was established in 1981 by WCCO Radio/TV in memory of C. J. Mulrooney, an executive with WCCO Television. He had earlier worked in the western timber industry, and this scholarship recognizes his interest in and involvement with the forest products industry. The purpose of this fund is to provide scholarships to juniors or seniors in CFANS with the first preference being Bio-based Products majors specializing in marketing.

Forest Products Management Development Institute (FPMDI) Scholarship

The Forest Products Management Development Institute is a unique industry/university partnership with support from forest products industries. Its mission is to increase knowledge about wood products production and use, and associated issues, strategies, and technologies on the part of forest products industry employees, key forest products consumer groups, and those involved in shaping national and regional forest policy. FPMDI, a strong supporter of the Department and a member of the Industry Advisory Council, provides funding through the Bio-based Products Marketing and Management (BPMM) and Residential Building Science and Technology (RBST) scholarship fund.

Ferguson Heritage Endowed Scholarship

Established in 2001, this scholarship is intended to assist students focusing their studies on commercial wood fiber production and conversion. This scholarship will benefit full-time juniors or seniors either in Forest Resources or Bio-based Products.

Don and Nancy Butler Scholarship

This fund was created in 2001 by Don and Nancy Butler and Butler family members for new students who meet the admission requirements in CFANS. The scholarship benefits undergraduate students entering or enrolled and majoring in Forestry or Bio-based Products who are from a small town or rural area, demonstrate financial need, and have a B+ grade average. The scholarship is renewable for the recipient provided scholarship requirements continue to be met.

DONAN Scholarship

This fund was established in 2005 by Butler family members to celebrate the 50thwedding anniversary of Don and Nancy Butler. "Donan" is for Don and Nancy. Don is a 1953 graduate of the former College of Natural Resources (CNR). He and Nancy were partners for 20 years in a lumber trading business. They value the role that higher education has played in their lives and want current students to experience similar success. The scholarship is for new students who meet admission requirements in CFANS. The scholarship is renewable for the recipient provided scholarship requirements continue to be met. Preference is given to students interested in Bio-based Products.

Bio-based Products Student Leader Scholarship

Friends, colleagues, and former students of Professor Jim Bowyer>established this scholarship in his honor in 2006 upon his retirement from the University of Minnesota. Professor Bowyer provided more than 36 years of outstanding service to the Forest Products community and to increasing public understanding of natural resources and environmental issues. He served as Professor and Head of the former Department of Forest Products. This scholarship is to support new students who meet the admission requirements in CFANS and show academic and leadership promise. The scholarship is renewable for the recipient provided scholarship requirements continue to be met. Preference is given to students interested in majoring in Bio-based Products Programs including Marketing and Management, Residential Building Science and Technology, and Bioproducts Engineering. Preference is also given to students with a strong academic record, good communication skills, and a rich history of demonstrated leadership through student organizations, student government, youth organizations, community service, and/or volunteer activities.

Professor Jim L. Bowyer Scholarship by William S. and Margaret Wallin Marvin

The Marvin family and Marvin Windows have been long-standing and generous supporters of the department. In 2005, Bill and Margaret Marvin established the Professor Jim Bowyer endowed scholarship honoring Jim’s outstanding contributions to the forest products field. The purpose of this scholarship is to support students pursuing a degree in Bio-based Products.

Robert C. Bernard Scholarship

Established in 1988 with a gift from Lori Dally Bernard, widow of Robert (1986 graduate) and gifts from many friends and relatives including his former employer, Georgia Pacific. The purpose of this scholarship is to support students pursuing degrees in Bio-based Products.

Henry J. Schmitz Wood Engineering Scholarship

This endowed scholarship was set up in honor and memory of Professor Henry J. Schmitz, 1892-1965. Henry Schmitz served as Head of the Division of Forestry (forerunner of Natural Resource Sciences) from 1925-1947.

Forest Products Marketing Scholarship

This scholarship (formerly known Hoo-Hoo Club Scholarship) was established by Hoo-Hoo International, one of the oldest service organizations interested in the welfare and promotion of the forest products industry, supports students pursuing degrees in Bio-based Products Marketing and Management.

Professor Kewen Karen Yin Scholarship

This endowed scholarship was set up in honor and memory of Professor Kewen Karen Yin, 1946-2006. Professor Yin was a faculty member in the department from 1998-2006. The endowment fund supports students with a preference in Bioproducts Engineering.

Northwestern Lumber Association Scholarship

This endowed scholarship was created in January of 2006 by the Northwestern Lumber Association (NWLA) with the support of the members of the association and the North American Wholesale Lumber Association. NWLA is based in Minneapolis. The endowment supports students majoring in Bio-based Products.

Evan Allred Scholarship

Evan R. Allred received his B.S. from the Utah State University and his M.S. from the University of Minnesota. He was a faculty member in the Department of Agricultural Engineering from 1945 to 1986. He taught and conducted research in areas of irrigation, drainage, water supply, and agricultural waste management. He advised a number of graduate students and served as an irrigation consultant in India, Indonesia, Pakistan, France, England, and Germany during his career. Source of funds: Generous contributions from Evan and Donna Allred and alumni.

Arnold M. Flikke Scholarship

Arnold Flikke received his B.S. from the University of Wisconsin, his M.S. from the University of Minnesota, and his Ph.D. from Auburn University. He taught in the Department of Agricultural Engineering from 1946 until his retirement in 1987. He was department head from 1973-1983. (Acting head 1972-73.) During his time on the faculty, he taught courses in a number of areas including electricity, soil-plant engineering, instrumentation, structures, drawing, surveying and physics. His research areas included utilization of electricity in agriculture, livestock watering systems, use of waste heat for water heating, grain drying with heat pumps, instrumentation and controls, plant growth and environment, and potato structures and livestock shelters. Source of funds: Donations from faculty, staff, alumni and students. This scholarship was created to honor Dr. Flikke when he retired in 1987. Significant contributions were made by Alton Levorson, Wayne Schober, and Walter Peterson.

Alton Levorson Scholarship

Originally from Brooten, Minnesota, Alton Levorson began at Sauk Center Junior College and graduated with a B.S. in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1943. Early in his career he was employed by Green Giant and Chisholm-Ryder Co., Niagara Falls, NY. In 1954, he joined the state department, providing technical assistance under the Marshall Plan in Turkey, Bolivia, Vietnam, Ghana, Japan, Washington, D.C., and the U.N.

Source of funds: Generous contribution from Alton Levorson.

Charles and Janet Otis Scholarship

Charles K. Otis received his B.S. from the University of Wisconsin and his M.S. from the University of Minnesota. He was a faculty member in the Department of Agricultural Engineering from 1936 to 1966, when he died suddenly in the prime of his career. He taught and conducted research in the area of farm building design. He also was well known for his research on silos and their contents. His widow, Mrs. Janet Otis, established a scholarship in his name. Following her death, the family established the Charles and Janet Otis scholarship to recognize both of their contributions to the department and profession.

Source of funds: Generous contributions from Elinor Otis Fehr and Walter Fehr.

Walter Peterson Scholarship

Walter Peterson is a 1936 alumnus of the department. He originally came from Hayfield, Minnesota. He is president of Peterson Manufacturing Company at Plainfield, Illinois. The company is known for its wheels for construction, industrial and agricultural equipment. and customized stamped, formed or fabricated components. Source of funds: Generous contributions from Walter Peterson and his family.

John Strait Scholarship

John Strait received his B.S. from Purdue University and his M.S. from the University of Minnesota. He was a member of the faculty from 1938 until his retirement in 1986. John taught and did research in the areas of power and machinery, specifically in the design of special machines for wild rice processing and production.

Source of funds: Major contributions from Patrick F. Flynn with a matching contribution from Cummins Engine Company and contributions from other alumni.

Alumni Scholarships

These alumni-supported scholarships began in 1994. The scholarships were set up to recruit high ability freshman and transfer students. Source of funds: contributions from department alumni, including major contributions from Alton Levorson.

Andrew and Anne Hustrulid Scholarship

Andrew Hustrulid was a faculty member in the Department of Agricultural Engineering from 1937 to 1971. He was known as a superb teacher by two generations of students. His research activities included rural electrification, frozen food storage, and grain drying. After Dr. Hustrulid’s death in 2003, a scholarship was established in his name by his widow, Anne. Following her death in 2004, their family has continued to support this scholarship in both their names for deserving engineering students in the department.

Ian Moore Faculty Scholarship

The award is a faculty-supported award in memory of Dr. Ian Moore. Dr. Moore was a faculty member from 1986-1990. Dr. Moore passed away in the fall of 1993 from cancer.
