Dr. Tim Smith selected as a Resident Fellow of the Institute on the Environment (I on E)

Dr. Sangwon Suh wins the University's prestigious McKnight Land Grant Professorship for 2009-2011. The major purpose of the program is to strengthen our faculty for the future.

Professor Sangwon Suh has been named to the International Panel for Sustainable Resource Management by the United Nations Environmental Program. The panel provides scientific assessments of policy relevance on the sustainable use of natural resources and helps build understanding of how to decouple economic growth from environmental degradation.

6/3/08 Professor William Tze, lead author, has been chosen as one of the co-recipients of the 2008 FPS L. J. Markwardt Wood Engineering Award for the paper "Evaluation of Load Transfer in the Cellulosic-Fiber/Polymer Interphase Using a Micro-Raman Tensile Test". This award consists of an engraved plaque and certificate for each one of you and a $1000 honorarium written out to the Senior Author.

Research Fellow Michele Scherman has been awarded the 2008 CFANS Distinguished Diversity and Inclusion Award for years of tireless service to many underserved communities in the state and the around the Twin Cities area. Her work has focused on the Hmong community, migrant agricultural workers and now includes East and West African well as new Eastern European immigrant communities. The significance of working in community, and learning through collaborative, mutually transformative partnerships, is a hallmark of Michele's approach to engagement and being effective. She has contributed in important ways to public health and food safety in these communities. More information...

Professor William Tze has received the Richard C Newman award for the art of teaching for 2008. This award recognizes a College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences faculty member in the departments of Forst Resources, Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology, or Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering who focuses on the natural resource sciences, achieves excellence in teaching and has a positive influence on students.

Professor Harlan Petersen has received the Richard C Newman community impact award for 2008. This award recognizes a College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences faculty member in the departments of Forst Resources, Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology, or Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering who achieves excellence in designing and delivering outreach programs that have positive impact on external communities and Minnesota citizens.

Congressmen Tim Waltz (MN) and Rahm Emanuel (IL) visited the department for a renewable energy roundtable and laboratory tour. Roger Moore, President, MN Corn Growers Association, Jim Palmer, Executive Director, MN Soybean Growers Association, Dean Al Levine and Sr. Assoc. Dean Abel Ponce de Leon from CFANS and Dean Bev Durgan from College of Extension were also present for a discussion of the future bioeconomy work force development, next generation renewable energy opportunities and policy needs with Congressman Walz and Congressman Emanuel.
